Okay, I’m getting pretty good at do-it-myself type projects, BUT there is one thing I need to do that I’m kind of chicken about. I need to replace my air filter(s). I know the one in the heating unit was replaced in November and if I have more than one, I’m not sure where #2 might be.
Anyway, I know there is an air filter somewhere around the heating unit, but I’m too afraid to open the door because there is a hole at the top of that closet – which is right below where we found the snake. I am terrified what I might find if I open that door, but I really do need to change the filter.
Part of me thinks that I possibly have a second air filter somewhere, but I have no clue where it is and have no clue how to find out. Any suggestions?

If it is a bull snake, then what you have is a natural solution to your mouse problem. What’s that you say, you don’t have a mouse problem? That’s right, because you have a snake in the area instead. In fact, they tend to eat so many rodents, that they are considered by many, beneficial to have around. While bull snakes tend to mimic rattlesnakes when they’re alarmed, they are not venomous, just scary looking. They tend to hunt in the mornings and evenings, except in the hottest times of summer when they are more active at night.
You discovered it in March, so chances are it was just wintering there as the warmth that attracted it also attracted the mice it was eating. This time of year, it’s probably outside where the mice are.
I know less about air filters, but have only seen one per unit in all the homes in which I have lived.
If all of this was unhelpful, perhaps you should rephrase your situation as “a fair maiden unfairly imprisoned by an evil dragon,” and some brave knight will step forward to your rescue. Tell him afternoons are the best times to catch it sleeping.
LOL! I don't know who this is, but thank you so much for your input. Yes, I know that having a snake in my attic can be productive in keeping the mice away, BUT, that doesn't change the fact that I don't like snakes and I prefer not to come face to face with it.
How did things work out this weekend with your vent? Any suprises?
I was home alone most of the weekend and too afraid to open it - just in case. I'm really brave - when I'm not alone. ;o)
Hah! Just do it like a band-aid, rip it open and see what comes out! =) Just do it in the AM before you go to work. That way if you do get attacked, then your work will wonder where you are and send someone to check on you when you don't make it in ;).
But I have to be at work an entire hour and a half before anyone that would question the fact that I'm not there. I could be dead by then!
